accidentally patriotic {MLK Day 2010}

He had a dream.

We knew he'd had a dream. We hadn't forgotten his dream, but we may or may not have forgotten we live so close to where he gave a speech sharing that very dream, and that should we venture out on a bike ride on the day honoring Martin Luther King, Jr. himself, we might stumble onto his monument (or at least his engraved quote at the top of the stairs of someone else's monument). Of course. Welcome to the convenience of Arlington. (Potential visitors, that was a plug for you!)

As a free day to have Jon with us at will, we plotted and planned a bike ride since it's been much too long since our last (darn the January sub-twenties phase we've been having. We left Logan for a reason! This is not what we bargained for!!), and decided it would be a route of Van's choice. Not that he's fluent in English or anything, but were we to ask him what he likes, he would either soar his pointer finger through the sky with an appropriate airplane engine sound, pump his arm while sounding the imaginary train whistle with his "too too!" train sound, or flap his fingers to his palms and say "duck! duck!"

In that case, our course was set. Load up the bikes and start the party at Gravelly Point. Where all airplane sighting dreams come true, ducks can be regularly spotted, and if you're lucky, you can even catch a metro passing overhead while you're cruising on the trail.

And we're happy to report, Gravelly did not disappoint. Van was pretty stoked to see that things he'd only seen (or could only remember seeing) in books were actually real. He rocked our parental world with his appropriate self-sign-language responses to everything he saw, accompanied by his perfect sound effects and sheer joy for having recognized each thing.

We like ducks.

And airplanes.

And we LOVE bike rides. Clearly. {see joy below}. And tell me you love the fact that I have a sippy cup in my pocket. The mommy staple. It turns out I can handle losing a little pride for the sake of his happiness.

Dance and rock on. Jon was so proud to see his son pull off the rock sign. He's been teaching him long and hard.

As luck would have it, we even happened upon the MLK Day presentation by the National Park Service, including the playing of a recording of Dr. King's speech, which took place from the very place the rangers were standing. Really cool idea until they realized no one had charged the stereo battery the night before—cue park ranger #2 to read the speech out loud to the crowd. Really cool opportunity for us until we missed it all thanks to the maniac...oh how we love our crazy man.

The face of mischievousness we've come to know all too well. This was when he was trying to sabotage the ranger's big moment.

This was the greatest part of the day...

The unbelievable happened. He fell asleep on his face while riding in the beach cruiser. Completely unaffected by bumps on the path, roaring airplanes overhead, and his parents stopping repeatedly to capture the perfect picture of his nose being squished just so. Seriously, it was possibly the cutest thing we'd ever seen.

how to unintentionally fall off the face of the blog world

IMG_6124

As you may or may not have noticed, we've been experiencing somewhat of a blogging famine. All sorts of things have been missed. The holidays (starting with the 4th of July...), birthdays (mine and Van's), small trips, haircuts, projects, and a baby who suddenly carries the title of toddler and all that comes with it––walking and running, signing with his little chubby hands, talking his heart out in his best alien language, throwing killer tantrums, and giving the greatest hugs. And I don't even have some rockin' side hobby like sewing or crafting to use as an excuse for not having documented it all nice and orderly here.

It makes me feel a lot better when I see other blogs that have also not updated for months, leading me to believe we're not the only ones that have got tied up in living life and unfortunately bailed (hopefully a temporary state) on recording it.

But my feeling of being behind in life doesn't begin and end here at the blog.

The usuals:
  • blogging to catch up since July :(
  • cards to send out (July-August birthdays) and cards to make & send (every birthday after that)
  • emails to respond to
  • phone calls to make to catch up with friends
  • thank you notes to write
  • things to do for our calling at church
  • laundry (I'll let it pile up for much longer than I should, then when I finally get it washed and dried, I'll let it sit in baskets for a week until I sit down to fold it . You should have SEEN the pile on our bed just days ago that took over an hour to tackle)
  • dishes (for some reason when I get behind in the whole loading/unloading the dishwasher process it makes me feel eerily like a college student all over again)
  • books we're both dying to read that are getting covered at the rate of one chapter a week
  • design jobs for friends and family that have been on the FRONT burner for months, and still haven't fully made it out the door
  • we haven't had anyone over in much too long...and we miss it
  • there are always more photos to upload, more tiny edits to make, more CD's to burn and get off to their rightful owners, and more life goals to dream up and someday fulfill
Really, I'm just looking for a little reinforcement from anyone to let me know it isn't just me that sometimes feels 100% behind in almost every aspect of life.

Not to say we're dismal or covered by a black cloud here in the Smith home, because we LOVE life! We are loving where we're at and exciting thoughts of where we could be in the future, we're loving being married now as much as we did the day we sealed the deal, and more than anything, we're bursting at the seams with the happiness our little man brings us. We know we're blessed, and we're so grateful for that. I just wish we had more time to share all that with others, and do so in a more timely manner. It would be nice to feel "on top of things"––even the thought of it hints at a huge release of weight from the back of my mind.

I recently spoke separately with my mom and my mother-in-law about this always-behind-phenomena, and they seemed to both be able to relate, giving me the feeling that this might be a recurring theme for life. As long as we're not the only two crazies out there, then I can probably handle that. But please let me know if you've found any miracle working techniques that have potential to help one be on top of things.

So.

Know that we have the largest backlog of photos you've probably ever seen in your life, all waiting to come front and center to our little blog. And please know that I really do want to call you, email you, send you that thank you note, and come visit you. And we really do want to invite you over. And just so our parents know, we really do DREAM about going to bed on time and we would feel as though we had arrived at heaven itself were we to ever make a habit of it.

But we haven't become resigned to the backlogging life, after all, this is a new decade, which means big things could happen. We've opted for simplifying our goals for this beautiful new year of 2010, and if simplifying goals has the unintended result of simplifying life, then that would be big indeed.

Just ask Van. He would totally agree.

backyard date night {10.23.09}

IMG_2719_2

Melissa and I have a made a habit out of reserving Friday nights as "date night" every week. These used to be a little more involved before the cute little man came into our life (and thank goodness that he did). Now-a-days we try to snag babysitters at least once every month, but on the other Fridays we have to get a little more creative without leaving the house. This was one of those Fridays.

We got the idea of doing long exposure photos for a date night from my brother Joel and his wife Kalli, who had a very impressive long-exposure shoot a while back.

IMG_2698

We started out taking pictures of each other but had a lot more fun with the flashlight, which began with some simple shapes such as this lovely spiral by Mel.
IMG_2703

Then I tried my hand at some flashlight typography. It took me a couple times to get the letters in Melissa's name not backward (you have to write the word backward because you're standing behind it). I also had some trouble spelling Halloween but Melissa laughed and straightened me out quickly.
IMG_2706_2

IMG_2709_2

Then Melissa proved that she's the queen of drawing. It's pretty amazing that she drew this entire pumpkin and ended at the exact spot that she began. Her ghost is probably my favorite from the whole night. And isn't Melissa cute on the right, with her little scarf and wearing what looks like a pink mini skirt :)
IMG_2711_2

IMG_2714

As you know I'm a professional artist, but as you can see my illustration skills still haven't progressed passed stick figures. In case you can't tell, the little one is Van.
IMG_2722_2

Now this last photograph revealed a new lover in Melissa's life named Lon. This is the real reason I'm writing this post. If anyone knows this Lon guy, please give me any leads you may have. Melissa just laughed and wouldn't tell me anything about him.

cruisin'

{11.06.09}

After one long year of waiting (and yet at the very same time, one unbelievably fast year of having this cute little guy in our life), at long last we ventured back out on our trusty, gear-less, back-pedal-brakes beach cruisers. We've been dying all year to get out and go cruising the neighborhoods, but the law here says children must be at least 1 year old and must have a helmet. So you can guess what he got for his birthday. Or what we got for his birthday. :) One baby's first birthday, one front baby carrier, one crash test dummy helmet, and 3 days later, and we were bursting at the seams to go let Van experience the wind in his face firsthand.

And so he did. Van's a funny kid. Unless you're throwing him 10 feet in the air, swinging him upside down, or tickling him like crazy, he's pretty straight-faced when he's happy with life. He just stares straight ahead and totally relaxes, and if you knew him, you would know this is a big thing (relaxing, that is). He's done this since the day he was born whenever we took him outside, and today he's no different. He gets so relaxed he even lets us strap a crazy big helmet on his head. It's hard to encapsulate in words how funny (read: so absolutely adorable it makes us want to kiss his face off) he looks riding in that little carrier, so instead of trying to do just that, we'll post a video and let you see for yourself.

We're feeling pretty lucky to be riding around with this cute bundle of boyness behind the handlebars. (he's 1...can you believe it? More on that to come of course...)

HOW Design Conference {6.23-27.09}

My work finally sent me to the coveted HOW Design Conference in June which I've been interested in attending for the last 4 years, ever since I've been there. It's probably the biggest graphic design conference in the country and this year it was in "Weird Austin", which I quickly learned was its nickname.

1. AUSTIN TEXAS
The city was definitely a little strange, granted we only hung out in the main downtown area of Austin which brings out the crazies. Probably the two weirdest things were the "Weird Austin Museum" that we went to on the first day and saw all kinds of two-headed animals and shrunken-headed men, I didn't include a photo of this place, a little too weird. The second thing that was weird is that there are occasional cross dressers that walk the streets, I saw a kid about my age in a dress looking all dolled up acting nothing was weird at all, and there's even a famous street walking cross dresser who's about 58 years old named Leslie Cochran, if you don't believe me look him up on Wikipedia.

One of things to do there in the evening is go to a certain bridge and watch millions of bats fly out from under bridge to fly away and go catch their food for the night. The bats were coming out in swarms and kept coming for 10 to 15 minutes.

CIMG2741_2

DSC01483_bats

I did like all the art on the walls of buildings as I walked around the city, it wasn't just ugly graffiti but pretty creative designs. I also liked the capital building there, it's a cool looking one.

Since the moment I laid eyes on this beautiful, blue-tiled wall, I wanted to have a photo shoot at it, which we did.
CIMG2732_2

While we were trying to get this jumping photo we had to keep jumping because there were so many cameras on timers taking pics at different times. I put my camera on video without telling anyone and I caught everyone busting some sweet moves :)

2. HOW DESIGN CONFERENCE
I made the most of the conference by attending every possible event that was offered, taking copious notes as I enjoyed the classes, meeting as many people as I possibly could each day, and making a point to meet every presenter that I enjoyed. Two of the best presenters were LDS designers from Salt Lake City. Some of my favorite classes included "Good vs. Great Design", "50 Ways to (Almost) Get Fired", "The WOW Factor: Developing Strong Presentation Skills", and "Visual Story Telling".
CIMG2748_2

I was interviewed by the HOW conference peeps and now I'm famous.
DSC01390_2

One really neat thing we did before the conference was a thing called studio tours where they take us on a tour of 6 different design firms located in the Austin area and we got to see how their business functioned and what kind of design work they would do. It was amazing to me how different each of the firms were with what type of work they took in. I have a couple photos of those firms below.
DSC01374_2

CIMG2676_2

This is an inspiration wall inside the company Milkshake, since I saw this I made myself an inspiration wall at work.
CIMG2671_2

Another cool thing at the conference was a typography exhibit that had a bunch of amazing posters, I could have spent all day looking at those posters. It would be fun to work on a poster like that some day.
CIMG2681_2

CIMG2684

I attended the "Keep Austin Weird" closing reception and dance where we lit up the dance floor! I donned some sweet white spectacles and some glow sticks as a belt buckle and shoe laces. It was a good time, as you can clearly see for yourself in the photo.
